About product

The Short S.4 Satellite in 1:72 scale from the maker Avis

An unassembled plastic kit of the little-known British Short S.4 Satellite light aircraft in 1:72 scale. It is a short-run kit, that is a mold with fine surface relief but one where you have to count on cleaning the parts up and trying the joints dry. It is exactly such types that make a collection interesting: beside hundreds of wartime fighters an interwar light aircraft is a fresh exhibit that catches the eye at a show simply because nobody knows it.

The real subject

The Short S.4 Satellite was a British light two-seat aircraft of the mid-1920s, built at a time when Britain was looking for a route to cheap and accessible sport flying. The firm Short Brothers put its experience with metal structures into it; the main feature of the machine is its monocoque fuselage, which set it apart from the wooden framework covered with fabric that was then usual. The nickname given in the name refers precisely to the metal construction of the fuselage and to the company's test pilot. Only a handful were built and it never reached series production.

Building and painting tips

Go over the mating faces of the parts with a file, as on short-run molds they tend to be rougher. Finish and paint the cockpit and the inside of the fuselage before you glue the fuselage together. Glue with a thin cement for plastic, as the joint can then be dosed better. Apply a thin primer before painting, as it reveals small scratches left by sanding. Matte paint and a fine accentuation of the ribs suit the fabric areas; varnish the spot with gloss varnish before the decals so that no silvery edge appears, and finally even the surface out with matte varnish.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of interwar aircraft and rare types
  • modelers who want something in a display case that nobody else has
  • more experienced builders used to short-run kits
  • anyone interested in the development of metal aircraft structures

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A British light two-seat aircraft of the mid-1920s, of which only a handful were built. It is interesting above all for its metal monocoque fuselage.

Rather not. Short-run molds call for cleaning the parts up, dry fitting and patience over the fit. Suited to a modeler who has already built a few kits.

It is tied to the metal construction of the fuselage and to the company's test pilot. It is a period nickname that the maker used in the designation on the box.

It does not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and you buy the glue and paints you need separately.
