About product

JGSDF Type 61 Tank (1:76)

A plastic kit of the Japanese Type 61 medium tank in 1:76 scale from Fujimi, out of their small-format military range. The model captures a tank of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) and is conceived as a small, uncluttered armor kit. A few crew figures are usually included as well.

The real subject

The Type 61 was the first tank developed and built in postwar Japan. It entered service at the beginning of the 1960s and replaced the older American M4 Sherman and M24 Chaffee tanks. It carried a 90 mm gun, had a cast turret and a welded hull, and served with the JGSDF until the 1980s, when the newer Type 74 took over.

Building and painting tips

With small armor models, careful cleanup of the parts and liquid modeling cement for plastic work well. Finish the running gear and the underside of the hull before you close it. A single-color finish is brought to life by subtle accentuation of the panels, a wash into the recesses and dust or mud pigments for the patina.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of postwar military hardware in 1:76 scale.
  • For anyone interested in the history of the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
  • For modelers who like small, quickly built armor kits.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was the first tank developed and built in postwar Japan, entering service with the Japan Self-Defense Forces at the beginning of the 1960s.

It carried a 90 mm gun, a cast turret and a welded hull.

It is a small kit in 1:76 scale that a less experienced modeler can manage; basic tools, glue and paints are enough.
