A kit of the four-engine tanker and transport aircraft in 1:144 scale. Academy encloses two marking options for US Air Force machines with the model, so you can pick the form that suits your display case. The small scale keeps both the span and the length within reasonable bounds, even though the subject is a genuine giant.
The Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter grew out of the design of a heavy bomber and you can recognize it by its characteristic fuselage made up of two interconnected cylinders. The tanker version got a retractable rigid boom and became the backbone of refueling in flight in the first postwar decades. The L version solved an awkward contradiction: piston engines could not keep pace with the jets they were meant to refuel, and so two extra jet pods were added under the wing. Machines reworked this way served for a long time yet with Air National Guard units.
On aircraft of this type the most work goes into a clean wing-to-fuselage transition and the joints on the split pods: it pays to fill and sand them before you start on the paint. Glossy metal surfaces are managed with a silver shade laid over a smooth base, and the individual panels are then told apart gently with a hint of a different tone. Prepare a smooth surface under the decals, so that no silvered edges appear anywhere.
The kit is sold unassembled and unpainted; paints, glue and accessories are not in the package, unless stated otherwise.
