An add-on set with the Cosworth YB engine for a car kit in 1:24 scale. It is supplied as a transkit, that is as a set of parts for a conversion, not as a model of its own.

The real subject

The Cosworth YB is a turbocharged inline four of two liters with a sixteen-valve head and a turbocharger. It made its name in the 1980s and 1990s under the hoods of fast Fords and in rally and circuit machinery, where far more could be had from it than the production version gave. For a modeler it is an engine that is recognized at first glance in an open engine bay.

What the set contains

Building and painting tips

• Build the engine dry and check whether it fits into the engine bay of your kit and how high it sets the hood.
• Cut the excess material and the marks from production away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the surface down.
• Choose the glue according to the material of the parts; whatever is not polystyrene will only be joined by cyanoacrylate glue.
• Wash and degrease the parts before painting and apply a thin primer.
• Paint the block, the head and the ancillaries separately while the parts are still loose; once assembled you will not reach the lower surfaces.
• Finish the valve gear and the lines with a brush at the very end, so that they stay legible against the dark block.
