A basic photo-etched set from the Voyager Model brand for a model of the Soviet ZSU-57-2 anti-aircraft system in 1:35 scale. Basic sets tend to be the most comprehensive choice for one model with this brand and they aim at the external fittings of the hull and the turret, covers, meshes and holders, that is at the places where injection-molded plastic is necessarily thicker than the scale calls for because of the production mold. The set is cut for the Takom 2058 kit; it need not fit other kits of the same vehicle, because they differ in the breakdown of the parts.
The ZSU-57-2 is a Soviet self-propelled anti-aircraft system of the 1950s. On a lightened chassis derived from the T-54 medium tank it carries an open rotating turret with a coupled pair of 57 mm automatic guns. The open roof of the turret made it easier to work the guns and to vent the propellant gases, but it did not protect the crew. The vehicle entered the armament of a number of states and lasted in service long after the end of its original role.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel or with photo-etch scissors on a hard surface, and make the bends in a photo-etch bender or between two blades, so that the edge is sharp and straight. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and more experienced modelers solder it. Before painting, degrease the metal and apply a primer intended for metal surfaces, otherwise the paint holds badly. Thin etched fenders will take a suggestion of bending and damage, which lends the model credibility. With basic sets, proceed subassembly by subassembly according to the instructions: glue the parts on the hull before the turret is fitted. Assemble and paint the running gear before you lose access to it. An open turret means that the inside of it will be visible, so it pays to paint it before the surrounding structure is closed up. Earth-toned washes and pigments applied from the bottom upward suit the weathering.
