An injection-molded plastic kit of the F-22 Raptor fighter in 1:48 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. It is a limited release of the proven tooling with new decals for machines of the Hawaii Air National Guard. The Hawaiian Raptors carry the code HH on their fins and prominent unit markings; the decals in this package aim at machines of the 154th Wing and its fighter squadron as they appeared in 2024, that is at real, particular aircraft, and that is exactly the point of this release. The kit itself matches the classic Hasegawa standard: clean engraved lines, precisely fitting parts and a build without needless complications.
The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is an American fifth-generation stealth fighter and is still regarded as the most capable machine for winning air superiority. It combines three things that no aircraft had brought together before: a low radar return, supercruise, that is supersonic cruise without afterburner, and thrust vectoring, which gives it extreme agility. The F-22 was never exported abroad; its export was prohibited by law, so it serves exclusively with the US Air Force. Those forces include Air National Guard units, among others in Hawaii, where the Raptors provide air defense over the Pacific.
Surface preparation is the key, and on this model doubly so. A stealth aircraft has a smooth surface and a flat finish without pronounced panel lines, so every gap, scratch and imperfect joint will show: there is nowhere to hide it, because there is no room here for weathering or for emphasized lines. Fill and sand the joints carefully with fine abrasive paper, then spray the whole model with a base color (primer) and finish off the flaws while they can still be fixed. Use thin cement for plastic so that it does not run over. Do the finish itself with an airbrush in thin coats; the grays of the Raptor forgive very little. Give it a gloss coat under the decals and flatten it at the end. It is a model for the patient, and the reward is a clean, elegant shape without distracting effects.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
