About product

The Aoshima 1:700 photo-etched detail set - HMS Hermes

This product is not a kit of the aircraft carrier but a set of detail parts in photo-etched metal from the Japanese manufacturer Aoshima. It is intended to improve a plastic model of the British aircraft carrier HMS Hermes in 1:700 scale. The photo-etched parts are a few tenths of a millimeter thick, so they can faithfully stand in for elements that simply cannot be molded in injection plastic at a realistic thickness - railings, lattice work, ladders and the fine structures of the superstructures.

The real subject

HMS Hermes was the first ship in the world designed and built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier rather than converted from another type of vessel. She entered the service of the Royal Navy in the 1920s. She had a fairly small displacement and a limited capacity of aircraft, but she served as an important intermediate step in the development of carriers. During the Second World War she operated among other places in the Indian Ocean, where she was sunk in 1942. Her silhouette with a tall island superstructure on the starboard side is typical of early British carriers.

Usage tips

Cut the photo-etched parts off the fret with a sharp tool on a hard surface, not with pliers - otherwise the material bends. Make the bends over a straight edge or in a bending tool, so that the fold is clean and in an exact line. They are glued exclusively with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or by soldering, as ordinary glue for plastic does not hold on metal. Degrease the metal before painting and use a primer, otherwise the paint will flake off in time. It is practical to fit the railings only at the very close of the build, when you no longer handle the model so much.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of ships who want to move a model from the box to exhibition level
  • Builders in 1:700 scale who are bothered by thick plastic railings and gratings
  • More experienced modelers with experience of working with photo-etched metal
  • Collectors of British vessels of the Second World War

This is an accessory for a model. The kit of the ship itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a set of detail parts in photo-etched metal with which you will improve an already purchased plastic model of the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes in 1:700 scale. The ship itself is not included in the package.

With cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), or possibly by soldering. Ordinary modeling glue for plastic will not join metal, because it works on the principle of melting the plastic.

Working with photo-etched parts requires a steady hand, a sharp tool and patience. If you have never built photo-etched parts, start rather with the larger parts and leave the railings until later.

Yes, we recommend it. The metal first has to be degreased and sprayed with primer, otherwise the paint holds badly on the smooth surface and rubs off during handling.
