A kit of the American heavy cruiser USS Salem in 1:700 scale in a higher outfit grade. The Deluxe version is richer than the basic release of the same ship; check its particular make-up against the details on the box. The model is intended to be built and painted.
The USS Salem was one of the ships of the Des Moines class, that is the last generation of American heavy cruisers, completed only after the Second World War. A characteristic feature was the automatic guns of 203 mm caliber with a high rate of fire, the massive turrets and the extensive superstructure with radar fit of the postwar era. The ship has survived as a museum exhibit, which makes it easier for modelers to check the details.
With the richer releases it pays to lay the procedure out in advance: spray the parts that are harder to paint after assembly while they are on the fret, and fit the fine accessories only onto a finished base coat. Smooth the hull and the decks before spraying, because at this scale the joints are noticeable at first glance. Emphasize the gray coat with a dark wash in the recesses and a fine lightening of the edges, and tell the wooden areas apart with a matte ocher. Glue the small metal and photo-etched elements with cyanoacrylate glue in tiny doses. We recommend closing the finished model with a matte varnish and seating it on a base.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
