A set of pre-cut masks, 1:72 H6K Mavis - Japanese national insignia, from Dead Design for spraying the hinomaru instead of using decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit but an accessory for a finished model. The set contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks of the Japanese national insignia. The Kawanishi H6K, listed by the Allies under the code name Mavis, was a four-engine naval flying boat intended for long-range reconnaissance over the Pacific, for patrolling and for transport duties.
Why mask on a flying boat
For 1:72 scale a model of the H6K has an exceptional span and large continuous areas of wing and hull. Large decals on them have the greatest tendency to silver, because the carrier film has to bridge engraving, panel transitions and, on the hull, a pronounced curvature as well. A sprayed insignia is part of the paint layer, so no film arises and a matte finish stays matte.
Let the coat cure thoroughly, otherwise the mask will bite into the paint when it is lifted. Place the mask according to the color scheme drawing, press the edges down all the way around and smooth the transition with a toothpick. Spray the paint in several thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask, so that it does not creep under. Lift the mask off while the paint is fresh, pulling at a low angle.
