An unassembled plastic kit of the three-engine Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 aircraft in 1:72 scale. Vintage Classics is the edition in which Airfix brings its older, time-proven molds back to the market in modern packaging. It differs from the newest molds in its conception of detail and in technology, which is worth approaching with realistic expectations. The model is supplied unpainted and without glue.
The SM.79, nicknamed Sparviero, was an Italian three-engine aircraft of the 1930s built of mixed construction. It was derived from a fast transport type and reworked for military use. Its distinguishing marks are the raised fuselage spine behind the cockpit and the engines placed in the nose and on both wings. The machine was used as a bomber and later above all as a torpedo bomber and was among the most widespread Italian types of its day. The structure with wooden features gave it good flying qualities and a considerable range for its day.
With older molds it pays to start by checking the dry fit. Remove the flash and the mold seams with a file and abrasive paper, level any small gaps in the joints with putty and sand them down gradually from coarser to fine paper. For gluing use thin extra-fine cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action and leaves no marks. Glue the glazing only after the fuselage is painted and protect it with a mask. Apply a primer before painting, which will even out the surface after sanding. An airbrush gives a more even result on a three-engine aircraft, especially with the intricate Italian camouflage schemes. Spray a gloss clear coat under the decals and, once dry, even out the sheen to the look you want.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
