0.8 mm opens the upper half of the range. The head already has a noticeable area, so the way it is polished or matted shows on it as well.
Responsibility details are not available.
From this step up a head stops being merely a point and becomes a surface. That has two consequences. First, the finish shows: a matte and a glossy element side by side look like two different parts even though their shape is identical. Second, inaccurate seating shows as well, because a tilted dome throws a shadow to one side and the eye reads it at once.
Worked out to the ratio of 1:12, that gives a screw with a head just under a centimeter wide. On a motorcycle that is the size of the screws of the front fork yokes, of the tank mounting or of the top clamp. In larger scales it drops to ordinary body fasteners. That is exactly why 0.8 mm, together with 0.9 mm, turns up in building instructions more often than the extreme steps of the range.
The hole for seating is drilled with 0.7 mm and it is good to guide it at right angles. If the element is to be set into a surface that will later be touched by a finger, it pays to sink it deeper and let only the dome stand out, otherwise it will break off during handling. The star hole is brought out once dry with a dark wash, which must not, however, flow under the foot of the element, or an unwanted ring will appear around the head.
The whole line keeps one grid from 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm, so the same shape of head can be used across a whole model and only the size changed according to what each part represents.
Before fitting it is worth sorting the elements and setting aside those whose dome was damaged in packing. At this step a flaw can already be seen with the naked eye and on a finished part it would be more distracting than a missing screw.
