The item on offer serves to fit out the stores on a machine already under construction. On its own it makes no model, but it can markedly lift the impression of the pylons, where plastic parts from the box have usually owed something in the crispness of their edges. The name gives the 1:35 scale and the designation of the AIM-9M version.
The AIM-9M built on the earlier all-aspect version and concentrated on resistance to countermeasures. Its improved seeker head tells a real target from decoy flares and from the thermal background better, so the missile does not stray from its path as easily as before. A motor with markedly lower smoke was added too, which makes it harder for an opponent to spot a launch in time. This version became the most widespread form of the family in the 1990s and serves in many countries to this day, even though newer types with a different way of locking on are gradually pushing it out.
Before joining them, look the parts over against the light and remove any residue from the mold. Use a small amount of cyanoacrylate glue for the joint, ideally applied on the tip of a wire, or the excess will run onto the shaped surfaces. It pays to paint it separately from the model and to fit the missile at the very end, when you will no longer touch it while handling the model. Handle the markings and bands with decals or a very fine brush; an overpainted thin line shows at once on a small diameter.
The accessory is supplied without paints and glue. The model of the machine is not included in the package.
