The third variant of sand tires for the Kubelwagen Type 82: five finished wheels complete with rims and one part of the torsion bar of the front suspension.
Responsibility details are not available.
When two identical vehicles stand on a diorama, the eye recognizes at once that they come from one mold. A difference in the tires is the simplest way to break that up, because the wheel is visible from every angle and changes the overall impression more than, say, a different color. This set carries the designation V.3 and is the last of the three forms of sand tire that came out in the range for this vehicle.
The five wheels are cast in one piece, the disc is a part of the wheel and nothing has to be assembled. A separate part of the torsion bar of the front axle goes with them. The seating matches the kits of the three brands named, so there is no need to drill new pins or to alter the track.
Tool steel has one rule that cannot be got around: every wall must have a draft angle, otherwise the part cannot be pulled out of the mold. That is exactly why molded tires have slightly tapered sidewalls and why the edges of the tread run inwards. A silicone mold is flexible, and a casting comes out of it even when the walls are vertical or slightly undercut. On a wheel that shows in the way the tread breaks sharply into the sidewall and the footprint is equally high across its whole width. On top of that comes a layer of detail that simply is not there in plastic, because the material would not flow in to fill it.
Once you have separated the sprue gate, check that the seating face is round. The casting keeps it that way, but the remains of the gate can tilt the wheel, and that then shows on the model more than any detail of the tread pattern.
Anyone building a whole column will appreciate that the vehicles can be told apart without any compromise in the accuracy of the shape.
