An injection-molded plastic kit of the OH-6D light observation helicopter in 1:48 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. It is a special edition referring to a finish prepared for an event at Akeno in 2019. According to the name the package also holds a figure of a female member of the armed forces, which makes the model an interesting basis for a small display-case scene with a comparison of scale.
The OH-6D is the Japanese license version of the light helicopter that came out of the American family of machines with the characteristic egg-shaped fuselage. It is used for observation, liaison and training. It is a small and agile machine with one turboshaft engine, a glazed front section of the cabin and skid landing gear. Akeno is a place associated with the aviation training of the Japanese ground forces, and machines from there appear regularly in special color schemes prepared for the individual years of such events.
A small helicopter in 1:48 stands or falls with the glazing: the extensive clear nose is masked frame by frame, and before you fit it, finish and paint the whole interior and the seats. Glue the skid landing gear on a flat surface, so that the model stands without rocking. A special finish means sharp color transitions, which are better done with a mask than freehand. Paint the figure separately from the model: the skin first, then the uniform, and work the face up with a fine brush and a light wash. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat, with the flat clear coat coming only at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
