A kit of a cruiser of the Chinese Imperial Peiyang Fleet in 1:350 scale. A subject from the end of the nineteenth century, rarely met in the modeling world.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Peiyang Fleet was the strongest of the four naval formations that Imperial China built up in the 1880s. Most of its large vessels were built in British and German shipyards, so they were modern ships for their day: armored sides, guns in open or lightly shielded positions and still tall masts above the steam engine. The test came in 1894 in the war with Japan. At the Battle of the Yalu River the fleet suffered heavy losses, and a few months later it was finished off in a base it had no way to leave. The cruisers of the Peiyang Fleet are thus among the ships that entered history through a single great battle.
For ships, 1:350 is the happy middle ground: the model is a sensible size for a display cabinet and still carries fine deck fittings. For a nineteenth-century vessel that is doubly true, because it is exactly the masts, the yards and the rigging that make the overall impression.
Separate the parts with a sharp blade a little away from the part, sand the stub down and wash and degrease the model before painting. Glue the hull on a flat base and fill the seams, which on ships show up immediately. Rig the lines from fine thread or drawn sprue only at the end, after the masts are glued on and the deck is painted. Tension the thread and warm it gently so that it does not sag.
For ship modelers looking for a subject beyond the usual names, and for collectors of 1:350 scale. Paints, glue, thread for the rigging and clear coat are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
