This is not a model of the ship but a set of replacement parts. It contains turned metal masts, yards and other turned and resin parts for a model of the battleship SMS Viribus Unitis in 1:350 scale. Because the manufacturer also offers a version of the same set cut for a different kit, the point is worth stating precisely: this variant is intended for the Trumpeter kit.
A mast injection-molded from plastic has to have a larger diameter than the scale calls for because of the mold, longer parts often sag as soon as they are taken off the sprue, and when the rigging is tensioned they bend for good. A turned metal mast keeps its taper along the whole length, stays straight and carries the pull of the rigging. Metal yards can be set at an exact angle and do not give way when tensioned rigging pulls on them. The resin parts add shapes that cannot be turned.
First wash the resin parts in warm soapy water to remove the mold release agent from the mold, and cut off the casting blocks. Sanding has to be done with respiratory protection. Glue the metal as well as the resin parts with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger joints rather with epoxy, for the longer time it allows for alignment. Pre-drill the holes for the mast feet in the deck with a micro drill bit; the part then stands upright on its own. Degrease everything with alcohol before painting and use a metal primer. String the rigging only after painting, otherwise neither brush nor nozzle will reach between the lines. Clean the finished model with a soft brush only, not with a cloth.
The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue, paints and material for the rigging are not included in the package.
