Metal accessories from the Polish maker MASTER for a model of the F-14 fighter in 1:48 scale. According to its name the set contains an Alpha probe and an angle of attack probe. It is not an aircraft kit but replacement parts for a plastic model that is already built.
In 1:48 a model is big enough to be looked at from close up, and that is exactly why every compromise on the small probes shows. A plastic part has a visible mold parting line that has to be sanded off, and once it is sanded it is no longer round. A metal probe has a circular cross section by the very nature of its manufacture and a surface that only needs degreasing. Add to that a rigidity that lets the part survive ordinary handling of the model, carrying it and wiping off the dust.
In a larger scale it pays to fit the parts dry and check the angle against a photograph or a drawing, since a probe out of line is spotted at once in 1:48. Cut off the plastic originals and level the surface with a file. Drill the hole exactly to the diameter of the pin, so that the metal part holds by itself and the glue only fixes it. Because of the time it gives you to align things, epoxy suits larger parts better than cyanoacrylate. Degrease with alcohol before painting and use a primer for metal. Leave the fitting for the end of the build, after the clear coat and the decals.
An accessory to a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
