Four Mark 82 bombs in the finish with a thermally protective coating, in 1:48 scale. The set is an accessory to an airplane model, not a kit in its own right. This particular version is one that practically cannot be substituted from the box: the thermal protection turns the surface of the bomb, otherwise smooth, into a distinctly coarser one, and an injection mold does not render that texture on a part made from halves. Anyone building an aircraft in a finish for shipboard operations needs it, otherwise the model will carry different bombs from the ones the real subject carried.
A thermally protective coating is applied to Mark 82 bombs so that the body withstands a longer exposure to high temperature, for example during a fire in a closed space. It protects the filling against a premature reaction and is typical of service where the ordnance is stored and transported in close proximity. The coating is recognized precisely by its coarser, more matte surface and tends to be distinguished by markings as well.
The main rule with this set reads: sand as little as possible where the texture is. Cut the casting block or the print supports off so that the remainder stays in a place that will hide in the attachment anyway, and clean up only there. When you do have to sand, do it wet with a very fine paper and check immediately whether the texture is holding. Before painting, wash the mold release agent off the parts. Apply the base in a thin coat, because a thick coat drowns the texture and the whole point of the set disappears. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue).
The set is an accessory, not a kit. It is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.
