A set of decals in 1:700 scale intended for a model of the aircraft carrier Shandong. It is not a kit of the ship, but an accessory: a sheet of water-slide decals that will replace hand-painted markings.
The real subject is an aircraft carrier with a ski-jump flight deck for launching aircraft, that is a vessel with an extensive flight deck full of horizontal markings. That is precisely the most demanding part of the painting in 1:700 scale: the lines, numbers and inscriptions are so small that they cannot be made straight or with a sharp edge using a brush. A decal gives an edge that hand painting cannot reach, and saves corrections and oversprays.
The surface has to be smooth and glossy — on matte paint a decal will go white around the edges. Cut the sheet up by individual designs close to the printing, dip the design in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it rest aside until it will move on the backing. Position it on a moistened surface with tweezers and a soft brush, and soak the surplus water up with a cloth from the center toward the edges. On broken-up surfaces and at engraved lines a softener will help the film to settle onto the surface. At the end, spray the whole model with a matte or semi-matte clear coat, which will hide the glossy film of the decal.
