About product

The blue of American national markings

The dark blue with the number FS15050 is the color of the markings of United States aircraft. It is the blue of the star in the circle and of the bars at its sides, and the same tone is carried by lettering, by bands around the fuselage and by the tail surfaces of machines given a ceremonial finish. The opening digit of the American standard denotes a gloss finish, which with national markings matches reality.

Small areas, great accuracy

Markings are most often handled with a decal nowadays, but there are situations where they have to be sprayed through a mask: large scales, machines for which no decal exists, or cases where the marking is meant to be partly painted over. For such work thin the paint more and lay it down in several light coats, so that the edge of the mask does not stand proud and the boundary stays sharp.

What is in the box

Ten milliliters of paint from the lacquer range with an organic solvent. It dries within minutes and once cured it can be overcoated with clear without the risk of smearing.

The thinning ratio

Use thinners intended for this group of paints, either the classic or the Leveling version. The manufacturer states a range from an equal part of thinner down to half that dose, according to how thick the paint is. Always stir the contents before application, because a saturated pigment settles quickly.

Blue on small parts

Besides markings, this tone suits small items where a decal would look out of place: lettering in large scales, color coding of armament or features of the ceremonial finishes in which machines were shown at air shows. A saturated blue is noticeably muted under a matte clear coat, so it is better to leave the gloss, or to apply the clear only to the surrounding area.

FAQ

In large scales, on machines with no suitable decal, or where the marking is meant to be partly painted over, spraying through a mask gives a more convincing result.

Apply thinned paint in several light coats. A heavy coat under the edge of the mask forms a raised ridge that shows once the mask comes off.

According to its place in the American standard it is a gloss tone. On markings on real aircraft that fits, as a matte finish was not used for them.
