The shade corresponds to number 36320 of the American Federal Standard, that is the darker half of the pair of gray tones that have defined the look of American tactical aircraft since the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. The darker tone lies on the spine and on the vertical tail surfaces, and the lighter one covers the sides and the underside. The result is a low-contrast camouflage whose aim is not to blend with the landscape but to blur the outline of the machine against the sky. The F-15 Eagle, the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the late naval F-14 flew and still fly in the same scheme.
Ten milliliters of thick paint with an organic solvent. Once dry the film holds hard and smooth, it will take masking tape and without trouble carries subsequent varnishing and weathering on top of it. The pigment settles to the bottom while standing, which is why stirring before every use is a necessity, not a recommendation.
The manufacturer counts on application with an airbrush and thinning with its own thinner of the same range, roughly at a ratio of one to one up to two to one according to the current thickness. For work with a brush a drying retarder has to be added, otherwise the paint drags marks. More even coverage and a cleaner final tone come when you unify the surface of the model beforehand with a light filling base, because gray behaves capriciously on plastic of mixed colors.
