Olive Drab 2314 JGSDF

The color

Olive Drab is a subdued green with a brownish cast, that is a shade that arose as a camouflage color and not as a presentation one. This version is carried under the manufacturer's part number C518 and is aimed at the equipment of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force; the number 2314 in the name refers to the shade designation on the real vehicle. Compared with the American olive, the Japanese green is noticeably colder and darker, which shows on a model above all when two machines of different origin stand side by side.

Where it is useful

Above all as the all-over base of a Japanese postwar vehicle, that is an armored vehicle, a self-propelled gun, a truck or towed equipment. A single-color finish is a challenge for a modeler: a large area in one tone looks flat without further work. It pays to lighten the middle of large areas slightly and to darken the places light does not reach, that is the spaces under the fenders and the overhangs of the superstructure. The shade also serves on the boxes, tarpaulins and small kit that accompany the equipment.

How to work with the paint

Shake and stir the bottle thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles at the bottom during storage. Use the thinner the manufacturer designates for the Mr.Color line and keep to the thinning ratio given on the package; do not carry habits from other lines over here. Apply several light coats instead of one heavy one and let the paint become tacky between coats. Wash and degrease the surface beforehand. Work in a well-ventilated area and close the bottle carefully after the work so that the paint does not thicken.
