The cutouts serve as a store of material for tufts. The package contains two pieces measuring 90 by 145 millimeters with a fiber height of ten millimeters. According to the manufacturer, one package yields roughly two hundred small tufts, which is enough for all the vegetation of a smaller diorama. The shade matches a green meadow in a richer rather than a spring-light tone.
The material is not self-adhesive, so it is anchored with a glue of your choice. The simplest procedure is to nip a tuft out of the mat with pointed scissors, dip the bottom in thin PVA glue and settle it on the base. The longer fiber takes trimming, so one material gives you tall tufts by a fence as well as a low, trodden lawn by a road.
You will get a natural impression by not spacing the tufts evenly. Leave bare patches, scatter fine ground cover between them and tilt some tufts slightly, as if the wind had pressed them down. A final light overspray in an ocher tone from above will unify the whole area and rid it of artificial uniformity.
The material also suits places other than a grassy area. A nipped-off tuft set into a gap between cobblestones, into a crack in concrete or under a downpipe immediately gives a scene an impression of neglect and passing time. Do not throw the shorter offcuts away; mixed with sawdust they serve as undergrowth beneath bushes.
