The Mechanical Dynastes is a plastic kit from the Marvelous Museum line of the maker Suyata. The theme is a machine-like, mechanically conceived form of a beetle of the genus Dynastes. It is not a biologically accurate model nor a miniature in any ratio — it is an artistic stylization on the borderline between a natural shape and a machine, and that is why you will find no scale on the item. The figure is not missing by mistake: it is not stated on stylized models, because there is nothing to relate it to.
The genus Dynastes belongs among the rhinoceros beetles, that is a group of large beetles of the scarab family. The males have a conspicuous horn-like projection on the head and another on the pronotum, between which they are able to grip a rival; the females are without horns. Representatives of the genus live in the Americas and belong among the most impressive beetles of all in shape, which makes them a rewarding theme for stylized models. A sister item of the line treats a different genus of beetle, so the Marvelous Museum works as a collectible series with a unified artistic conception.
Kits of this type live off the surface. Large rounded areas will give away every trace of the mold parting line, so cut the parts off with a margin, sand the remainder down and polish the surface over. A filler primer will unify the surface and reveal any overlooked grooves. A combination of metallic shades with a saturated color of the elytra looks striking: the metal is applied only onto a smooth base, because on a rough one it looks grainy, and it masks less well, so it belongs rather at the end. The detail will be drawn out by a dark wash run into the recesses and a fine dry brush along the edges. Finally, unify the surface with a varnish according to whether you want glossy chitin or a matte machine.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
