A photo-etched set in 1:35 scale from E.T. Model with CIP identification panels for the modern American M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams tanks. On the real vehicles the panels are fitted to the sides and rear of the turret or the hull on standoff frames and serve to tell friendly vehicles apart when they are observed through thermal imaging devices. The set holds photo-etched panels and brackets; it is not a kit of the tank.
The panel is in reality a thin plate hung at a distance from the armor, so a gap is visible between it and the hull. The plastic version from a kit either lacks that gap altogether or the panel is as thick as cladding. Photo-etched metal makes it possible to keep both the real thickness and the standoff on the frame, which is exactly what the eye notices first in the profile of the vehicle. The set therefore suits models in operational use, where the panels are part of the characteristic look of the vehicle.
Locate the position of the frames on the model first, from photographs of the particular vehicle you are building, and try the parts dry. Bend the frames along the score lines and glue them to the model before the panels themselves, so that everything sits in one plane. Degrease the metal with alcohol and make the joints with a minimum of cyanoacrylate. Spray a base coat for metal before painting. The panels tend to be a different color from the vehicle, so spray them separately and fit them once they have dried, otherwise you would have to mask them laboriously. Dust settled on the upper edge of the panel will give the result credibility.
This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
