There is no kit of the ship and no plastic parts in the package; these are separate photo-etched parts which are fitted onto a model already under way. The exact extent of the fret is given in the instructions and on the packaging of the product.
Photo-etch is a thin metal sheet with the shape of the parts etched into it. In 1:700 scale it can replace features that cannot be made from plastic at a matching thickness: crane structures, lattice girders, blocks and tackle and similar fine structures. The difference against a plastic part is immediately apparent on a finished model, because a photo-etched part has a realistic material thickness, whereas injection-molded plastic has to be far more robust because of the mold. The Gneisenau was a large German surface unit of the Scharnhorst class commissioned at the end of the 1930s; the 1940 state corresponds to one of her particular configurations.
Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp knife or a chisel on a hard support, not with scissors, so that they are not bent. Degrease the sheet with alcohol before gluing, because neither paint nor glue holds on a greasy surface. Make the bends over a straight edge or in a bending tool; sharp bends are easier if the sheet is first heated and allowed to cool, which softens the material. It is glued with super glue applied in the tiniest drops, and with larger structures soldering is also an option. Apply a primer intended for metal before painting, otherwise the paint will flake off during handling.
The set does not contain a kit of the ship, paints or glue. It is supplied as a fret of photo-etched parts to be cut out, bent and painted.
