An add-on set of injection-molded plastic parts in 1:700 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Aoshima. It is not a kit of a ship: it is a fret with deck armament and equipment that is bought to go with models of Japanese heavy vessels, that is, battleships, cruisers and aircraft carriers. The use is twofold — either you replace older and coarser parts from the original box with more sharply rendered ones, or you add elements missing from the base kit, or possibly build up a supply of spare parts for conversions and dioramas.
Parts of this size are easily lost, so cut them off over a tray and work with tweezers. It pays to paint them while still on the fret, to glue them on only after the hull has been varnished and finally to touch the cuts in. Refine the barrels of the anti-aircraft guns by lightly sanding the tip, or replace them with metal barrels if you want maximum detail. Paint the floatplane separately and seat it on the catapult only at the end. A fine wash brings out the shadows between the barrels and in the open structures better than painting the whole area dark.
This is an add-on set, not a model of a ship. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
