The package brings together accessories for one particular kit of the battleship USS Iowa in 1:700 scale. According to the name it contains a veneer deck with a self-adhesive layer, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts. Everything is cut for the Tamiya 31616 kit, and the set may not cover another version of the kit. The model itself is not part of it.
Photo-etched parts are thin brass pressings that in 1:700 scale stand in for railings, ladders, grating and other features that simply cannot be cast in plastic. A few habits pay off: cut the parts off on a hard surface with a sharp blade or with special cutters, and never break them out with your fingers. Pass longer straight parts briefly over the flame of a lighter; the brass softens and stops springing back. They are glued with super glue applied in a microscopic amount, ideally on the tip of a piece of wire, and before the glue grips you can adjust the part with tweezers. Degrease the photo-etched parts before painting and use a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth brass.
First finish and spray the hull, then lay the veneer deck onto degreased and leveled plastic, and only at the very end install the photo-etched parts. The reverse order almost always backfires, because a deck is hard to lay over finished railings and fine parts bend during handling. You will use the masking sheet from the set where a finished area needs protecting during further spraying.
This is not a kit. The model, paints, glues and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
