The Stearman-Hammond Y-1S is an American light aircraft of the second half of the 1930s and at first glance it stands apart from everything else that flew at the time. The short nacelle with a cabin for two seated side by side carries the engine at the rear with a pusher propeller, the tail surfaces are set back on two booms, and the machine stands on nosewheel landing gear at a time when the vast majority of aircraft came down on a tailwheel. The whole concept arose with the intention of making an aircraft that would forgive a mistake: a good view forward, simplified controls and behavior at low speeds that was to protect the pilot from an unintended spin. It was one of the attempts to turn flying into ordinary transport for a wider circle of people, and although production success never came, the shape of the aircraft remained impossible to overlook.
It is a plastic kit in 1:72 scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the extent of the parts and the procedure are set by the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.
The booms of the tail surfaces set the overall geometry, so glue them on a surface and keep checking whether the tail sits twisted. The cabin is glazed over a large part of its circumference, so it pays to equip and paint the inside before you close it, and to fit the clear parts only after spraying. The engine at the rear moves the center of gravity far back, so before you close the nacelle, test whether the model stands on all three wheels and add ballast in the nose if need be.
Paints, glue and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
