Wheels for the Willys with snow chains in 1:35 scale

A set of replacement wheels for a model of the light Willys off-road car. According to the name the wheels carry snow chains and are rendered as underinflated, that is with the tire flattened by the weight of the vehicle. Both belong to the details that give a standing model a sense of weight and of real service, and neither is found on the wheels from an ordinary kit.

The real subject

The Willys was a light four-wheeled off-road car that served the American army and its allies on practically every front in the Second World War. It was used for communications, reconnaissance, carrying the wounded and towing light weapons. On muddy and snow-covered roads chains appeared on its wheels, and in deep snow the car could not do without them.

Installation and painting

• Wheels with rendered chains and flattened tires for 1:35 scale.
• A replacement for the kit wheels, with no cutting into the rest of the model.
• Suitable for winter and muddy scenes and for a car displayed on its own.
• Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the remainder.

Before gluing, check that the axle stub fits the new wheel and carefully widen the hole if needed. Turn the flattened area of the tire down toward the ground and make sure that all the wheels sit evenly; a tilted flat spot gives itself away at once. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. The chains stand out if you go over them lightly with a dry brush in a metal tone after painting and dust the bottoms of the wheels with earth or snow according to the scene you have in mind.
