A combined accessory set for a model of the Japanese battleship IJN Musashi in 1:350 scale. According to the name it contains a veneer deck, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts. It is not a kit: the set is cut for the Tamiya 78016/78031 kit and without it you will not make use of it. Check before buying, therefore, that your box matches.
A veneer deck is a thin sheet of wood with the planking printed on it and a self-adhesive backing, which is stuck onto the plastic deck of the kit. Compared with an engraved plastic deck it has two advantages: real wood grain, which cannot be imitated by spraying, and precise, scale-thin gaps between the planks. The masking sheet then makes it easier to spray the metal areas around the wooden deck, so that paint does not reach where it should not.
First sand and degrease the plastic deck so that the adhesive will hold. Peel the protective film off the back in sections, not all at once; otherwise the veneer will stick down before you have lined it up. Work from the center toward the edges and keep pushing the air out with a soft cloth. Trim around the superstructures, the hatches and the turrets with a new sharp knife; a blunt blade tears the wood. The finished deck can be lightly stained or toned and finally fixed with a matte clear coat, which protects the veneer from moisture and abrasion. Fine weathering with thinned brown or gray paint will pick out the gaps between the planks. Fit the photo-etched parts only once the deck is finished and glue them with super glue in short sections.
This is an accessory for modelers. The ship kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
