About product

HMS Hood 1940, 1:700 - Flyhawk (Deluxe Edition)

A plastic kit of the British battlecruiser HMS Hood in 1:700 scale from the manufacturer Flyhawk. The Deluxe Edition adds a set of photo-etched parts and 3D-printed parts to the injection-molded plastic, so the model offers very fine details of the railings, the radars and the superstructures. It captures the ship in its 1940 configuration.

The real subject

HMS Hood was a symbol of the Royal Navy of the interwar era - a large, fast battlecruiser with a main armament of eight 381mm guns in four twin turrets. In its day it was among the largest warships in the world. It was built at the end of the First World War and throughout the 1920s and 1930s it represented the Royal Navy on overseas cruises, where it earned the nickname Mighty Hood. At over 260 meters long it was the flagship of the home fleet. In 1941 it was lost in battle with the German ship Bismarck in the Denmark Strait. The year 1940 captures the ship still in active service with Force H.

Building and painting tips

In 1:700 scale the photo-etched parts are very small - super glue, tweezers and a steady hand are advisable. The hull can be built as a full hull on a stand or shortened to the waterline for a diorama with a sea surface. The superstructures and the masts consist of fine parts that will come out well after spraying with an airbrush and emphasis with a wash into the recesses. It is advisable to glue the hull and the main decks first and only then to fit the small superstructures and the guns; fix the decals with a varnish compatible with the paint used.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of warships in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers with experience of photo-etch
  • Anyone interested in the Royal Navy of the Second World War

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
