About product

The KAB-1500L with a universal service cart in 1:72 scale (Advanced Modeling)

This item is a detail set, not an airplane kit. It joins two things that belong together on an airfield: the heavy guided bomb KAB-1500L and the universal service cart on which ordnance is moved to the machine and raised to the rack. Thanks to that the set suits both hanging under a model and a standalone scene of the ground crew on a diorama. The resin castings carry detail that injection-molded plastic in 1:72 scale as a rule cannot manage — above all on the structure of the cart and on the guidance head. The exact composition of the package is not stated here; the manufacturer's part number is AMC-72112-4.

The real subject

The KAB-1500 is a Soviet family of guided aerial bombs of the 1500 kg weight class. The version with the L index has a semi-active laser homing head — the bomb aims at the reflection of the laser beam with which the target is being illuminated. It is a typical weapon for destroying strongly resistant point targets where both high accuracy and great penetrating power are needed. Ordnance of this class is so heavy that without handling equipment it cannot be brought to the aircraft at all; the universal cart with its lifting mechanism is therefore an inseparable part of preparing a flight.

Building and painting tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw, and on the body of the bomb take care to keep the circular cross-section; when sanding resin, protect your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Put the cart together dry, so that the geometry of the wheels and the frame sits right. Painting: primer, a uniform shade for the bomb, a markedly different shade for the cart, a metallic gloss on the piston rods and the axles. You can imitate the optics of the laser head with a drop of gloss clear over a dark base. The cart takes noticeably heavier weathering than the bomb — dust, chipping and oil traces are in place on ground equipment.

Who the set is for

  • builders of models of Soviet and Russian tactical hardware in 1:72 scale
  • modelers building an airfield diorama with ordnance being prepared
  • anyone interested in precise underwing armament instead of coarser plastic from a kit
  • more advanced modelers with experience of resin

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and a base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It marks the version with semi-active laser guidance. The bomb navigates onto the reflection of the laser beam with which the target is being illuminated.

For moving heavy ordnance around the airfield and raising it under a rack. On a diorama it is a rewarding element of a scene of flight preparation.

It is not. The set contains the bomb and the cart only; the aircraft kit has to be obtained separately.

Ordnance tends to be maintained and clean, while the cart takes dust, chipping and oil traces. The contrast between the two surfaces does the scene good.
