What kind of set this is

This is a set of photo-etched parts meant for a model of a US Navy aircraft carrier in 1:72 scale. Etching can do what injected plastic cannot: thin sections, gratings, handles and railings come out at their true thickness rather than in a substitute shape several times too heavy. It is on these elements that the difference between an out-of-the-box kit and a worked-up model shows first.

Before you order the set

The designation of the item is cut short and does not say which ship and which part of the model the set belongs to. The box of the set and the manufacturer's data say so, and from them you can tell that the parts will fit exactly the model you are building.

How photo-etched parts are worked

• separate parts held in the sheet by thin tabs with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not by twisting
• file the remaining tab down with a fine file or sanding paper after separating
• bend along the marked grooves, best in a bending tool or between flat jaws
• glue with super glue in minute amounts, applied with the tip of a wire
• degrease the parts before painting and use a base paint meant for metal

Who it is for

The set is for ship modelers who want to take the surfaces and superstructures beyond the level of the kit and do not mind slower, fine work with tweezers. A beginner is well advised to start on a less conspicuous spot on the model and only then move on to areas that show.
