Mahogany — Vallejo Model Air acrylic paint

Mahogany is an acrylic paint from the Vallejo Model Air range, that is a water-thinnable acrylic mixed to a spraying consistency. The shade named after mahogany is a dark brown with a pronounced red undertone — deeper and warmer than an ordinary earth brown and, conversely, less orange than the rust shades. The 17 ml dropper bottle lets you measure the paint out drop by drop, which is especially useful with this color, because it is very often used not on its own but as one component of a mix.

Mixing shades and transitions

A dark reddish brown is a classic mixing tone. A drop or two pulls an overly cold brown into a warmer tone, adds depth to rust effects or gives you a base for wood — on wooden propellers, decks and crates a lighter undercoat is usually laid down first and the mahogany tone is then applied thinned over it to create the grain. It works just as well as a dark undercoat beneath metallic shades, to which it lends depth. Always write the ratios down in drops, otherwise you will not hit the same mix a second time.
