A small bench vise for modeling work. It holds a small part firmly in place, so that you have both hands free for it.
Responsibility details are not available.
Most mistakes in working on small parts come about because the part moves between your fingers. Filing, drilling, cutting or sanding in one stroke all call for the object not to move and for the modeler to be able to guide the tool with both hands. That is exactly what a small vise makes possible: it holds a part in the position you choose and you can concentrate on the tool alone.
It is a vise in a bench version, that is, sized for a modeling workplace rather than a workshop bench. It finds a use in working on the parts of kits, of accessory sets and of small metal material, and it serves equally well as a holder while gluing, when you need a joint held until the glue has set.
Clamp plastic and resin parts only tightly enough that they do not move. A thin-walled part easily cracks or takes the imprint of the jaws, so put a piece of hard card or felt between the jaw and the part. When drilling, guide the bit at right angles and let the speed do the work, not the pressure. After work, dust the vise off with a brush and remove the sanding dust, otherwise the grit gets into the moving parts and the action stiffens. Lightly lubricate the guide surfaces and the thread from time to time; apply the oil sparingly and wipe the excess off, so that dust does not stick to it.
For modelers who regularly work on parts beyond merely gluing them: who sand, drill, cut or build from accessory sets. Check the dimensions, the jaw opening and the method of attaching it to a working surface in the manufacturer's data. Tools, abrasives and models are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
