About product

Masking set for the markings of the P-38G/H Lightning in 1:48 scale

This set from MH models deals with a single but unpleasant step of a build: applying the national insignia and the other markings. Instead of a decal, a self-adhesive template is used through which the insignia is sprayed in paint. That removes the glossy film of the carrier, the visible edge and the risk of a decal wrinkling on a riveted surface. The markings are then physically part of the finish and will take later weathering. The set is cut for the Tamiya kit in 1:48 scale, so check before you buy that it matches the model you are building.

The real subject

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter with an unmistakable silhouette: a pair of tail booms and a short central nacelle with the pilot and concentrated onboard armament. The G and H versions fall in the middle part of the production line and brought more powerful power plants and changes in the supercharging system. The Lightning made its mark as a long-range fighter and as an escort and reconnaissance machine, and thanks to its two engines it was popular over wide expanses.

How to work with the masks

The surface must be smooth and fully cured, as otherwise the mask will not stick tightly and paint will run underneath. Transfer the template into place, press it down thoroughly especially around the perimeter of the cut-out, and spray in several very thin coats perpendicular to the surface so that paint does not get under the edge. Take the mask off while the paint is still fresh, and the edge will then stay sharp. With multicolor insignia you work in layers from the lighter color to the darker one.

Who the set suits

  • modelers who do not like the glossy edge of decals
  • builds where the surface is to be heavily weathered or rubbed
  • builders who want the markings without having to varnish the whole model to a gloss
  • as an accessory for a P-38 kit in 1:48 scale

This is an accessory for a modeler, not a model of the aircraft. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set, that is, an accessory for spraying the markings onto a model that has already been built. The model itself has to be bought separately.

A decal is applied as a thin film that always has some edge and can wrinkle on an uneven surface. A mask serves only as a template, the paint is sprayed directly onto the model and the insignia therefore has no film and no outline.

The contents of the sheet and the number of individual pieces are stated on the box.

The masks are cut to the outline of the Tamiya kit, so check the match with your kit in advance.
