A brown shade is among the most used paints on the modeling bench. It turns up on wooden decks, on leather seats, on straps, on crates and on the muddy ground of dioramas. The bottle holds a medium brown with no pronounced shift toward red, that is a tone that gets along well with the other earth colors.
Brown is exactly where it pays not to stop at a single coat. When you lay thin transitions of lighter and darker brown over the base tone, the surface gains a depth that an even spray will never give. It is thinned with water and applied with an airbrush.
Besides water, the manufacturer also offers its own thinner for this line. It gives a more even spray pattern and a somewhat longer time during which the applied paint stays workable. If you spray fine transitions or work at low pressure, reach for it rather than for tap water.
Earth tones often differ from each other only slightly and in the bottle they look almost the same. The only reliable comparison comes from a test card: a piece of plastic or card with sprayed patches and a note of which shade is which. Anyone who makes such a card once saves a lot of pointless purchases and hours spent repainting finished surfaces. The sample also shows the paint as it will look once dry, which differs from the impression given by the bottle almost every time.
