Character Flesh (2) - (Semi Gloss)

The color

The flesh tone is intended for the skin of figures, that is for faces, hands and all the uncovered parts of a figure. The number in brackets after the name sets the individual flesh tones of the same group apart, because no single universal skin tone exists and modelers choose between lighter and richer variants according to the real subject. The finish is semi-gloss, that is somewhere between a matte and a gloss surface. For skin that makes sense: a perfectly matte surface looks dusty and a living face on a model loses something by it, whereas a mild sheen supports the impression of a soft surface and brings out the modeling of the face.

How to apply the paint

The shade is suitable for a brush as well as for an airbrush. Stir the contents properly before use, so that pigment settled at the bottom is dispersed evenly, otherwise the shade changes from layer to layer. Use the thinner intended for this line and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging; another thinner may curdle the paint. Apply in several thin layers, because a single heavy one will flood the fine shapes of the face.

Tips for painting figures

With skin the base is decisive: apply onto a smooth, degreased and primed surface, otherwise the color of the material shows through. A face is usually built from the base tone toward shadows in the hollows and highlights on the raised places, that is on the forehead, the nose, the cheekbones and the chin. Soften the transitions with an almost dry brush and work rather slowly, over several returns.
