Under number 640 the British standard BS381C lists a very dark gray with a cool cast toward blue. It was carried by the upper surfaces of Coastal Command aircraft and of the carrier machines of the Fleet Air Arm, because seen from above they were meant to blend with the surface of the northern seas. In two-color schemes the shade alternated with dark green, and lighter under-surface tones followed it downward.
The range is designed for a gun. On plastic it does better with the thinner from the manufacturer, while water suits absorbent materials more, a wooden base or a cast figure for example. Whichever you reach for, thin it in moderation: paint that is too fluid loses its coverage and leaves a grainy film on the surface.
The key to a smooth spray is stirring right down to the bottom, otherwise the pigment stays settled and the coat dries matte and slowly. Stirring as you go rather than only at the start is advisable. If you want to transfer the shade with a brush, adding a retarder in a ratio of roughly one to four helps. A fine primer coat also settles the color tone over dark and light plastic alike.
Expect a dark tone to suppress fine surface relief. Leave picking out the panel seams until the coat is completely dry, then, and choose it more subtly than would seem necessary at first glance. Overdrawn lines on a dark surface immediately give away that this is a model and not a reduced version of the real thing.
