Landing flaps for the Curtiss C-46 Commando in 1:72 scale, intended for Valom kits. The large wing of the transport aircraft thus gets its high-lift devices extended.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Curtiss C-46 Commando was the largest twin-engine transport aircraft of American manufacture in the Second World War. Against the better-known Douglas DC-3 it carried considerably more and had a roomier fuselage with its characteristic double-bubble cross-section. It became most famous on the route over the Himalayas between India and China, where supplies for the Chinese front were carried in thin air and in weather that turned a flight into a lottery. With its massive radial engines and its broad wing it looks like a proper piece of aircraft in a display case even in 1:72 scale.
Replacement landing flaps in 1:72 scale for Valom kits, which allow the wing to be built in the landing configuration. It is exactly on a large transport wing that the difference is most pronounced, because extended flaps take up a considerable part of the span and add depth and shadow to a model at once.
Score the outline of the part to be cut out and work in several shallow strokes, because the thin wall of a wing forgives little. The parts are not polystyrene, so super glue holds the joints. Cut the excess material away a little from the part, sand the remainder off and wash and degrease everything before painting. With a large span, watch that both sides have the same angle of extension; you see that best from behind, against the light. The exposed space in the wing takes a dark wash and fine traces of use, while the surface of the flaps themselves should be kept restrained, so that the impression of one continuous area does not fall apart.
