A figure of a Belgian infantryman of the Chasseurs Ardennais with a bicycle, 1:35 scale, on a 1940 theme.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Chasseurs Ardennais were Belgian light infantry raised to defend the broken country in the south. They were recruited locally and fought in a region they knew from home. The mark of the unit was a green beret with a boar's head badge. The year 1940 is bound to them for good, because it was their sector that stood in the way of the advance through the Ardennes.
The set puts the soldier together with a bicycle. The bicycle was a common means of infantry transport in the Belgian army: it made movement faster than marching, needed no fuel, and in wooded country it got through where a vehicle could not. In a diorama it is a rewarding prop, because a bicycle tells at once that the figure was heading somewhere, and together with him it fills the space by a wall, by a tree or by a roadblock.
In this scale the bicycle tends to be the finest part of the set, so work on a light surface where you will see even a small part that drops. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the rest off carefully. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and let them dry. Choose the glue to suit the material of the parts. Keep the frame dark and matte and lighten the metal parts only along the edges; the uniform takes muted earth shades well and the leather straps a warmer brown tone.
For builders of dioramas from the beginning of the Second World War and for modelers who want action in a scene, not just a standing figure. Paints, glue and tools are not included, unless stated otherwise.
