About product

RLM 02 RLM-Grau (1941) – AIR (AK interactive, 3rd Generation Acrylic)

RLM 02 RLM-Grau is a water-thinnable acrylic from the aviation AIR sub-line of AK interactive's 3rd Generation acrylic line. The 17 ml bottle suits both brush and airbrush; once dry, the surface is matte and durable. Note: this is a modeling paint, not a kit — no model is included in the package.

About Shade RLM 02

RLM 02 was the most versatile shade of the Luftwaffe — a gray-green/gray that appeared on practically every aircraft. It was used mainly on interiors, wheel wells, the insides of covers and engine bays. It also served as a component of early camouflage schemes, combined with dark green shades, and later appeared in mottling on fuselage sides too.

An important clarification for model accuracy: RLM 02 was commonly used in cockpits, but visible pilot areas switched to the darker RLM 66 from late 1941 onward. If you are building a later aircraft, the cockpit will generally no longer be RLM 02 — it will still be in the wheel wells, the insides of doors and the engine bays. The designation (1941) in the name refers to a specific period version of the shade; the manufacturer does not specify it further, so treat it as a mixed variant rather than a binding date of use. RLM shades also varied in practice by manufacturer and batch — period photographs and profiles are a better guide than an exact number match.

Use

  • Interiors, cockpits of early German aircraft, wheel wells and the insides of covers.
  • Engine bays and the inner sides of doors and cowlings.
  • A camouflage component of early schemes and mottling on fuselage sides.
  • Airbrush once thinned with acrylic thinner from the same brand; small details with a brush.
  • A base for subsequent shading — washes, glazes and dry brushing all hold well.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of German Second World War aircraft who need a reliable interior and camouflage shade. Given how versatile RLM 02 is, it is one of the paints you will use across most Luftwaffe kits.

The paint is a low-odor, water-thinnable acrylic. Work in a ventilated room, use extraction and airway protection when airbrushing. Keep out of the reach of children. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use.

FAQ

Not automatically. RLM 02 was used in cockpits, but visible pilot areas switched to the darker RLM 66 from late 1941 onward. For a later aircraft, check the cockpit against period references. RLM 02 will still apply to the wheel wells, the insides of covers and the engine bays.

It refers to a specific period version of the shade — RLM 02 varied in practice by paint manufacturer and batch. The manufacturer does not explain the designation further, so treat it as a mixed variant of the shade, not a binding date of use.

A water-thinnable acrylic from the 3rd Generation line. It is not a lacquer or an enamel — do not use nitro thinner. Apply it straight from the bottle with a brush; for an airbrush, thin it with acrylic thinner from the same brand.

No. It is a modeling paint in a bottle. An aircraft model is not included.
