About product

Luftwaffe wheel chocks in 1:32 scale

A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Brengun brings chocks for the landing gear wheels of German aircraft of the Second World War period. According to the name the package holds two different types of chock, so you can choose the version that suits your scene better. The set is not an airplane kit in itself but an accessory that is added to a finished model in 1:32 scale.

What the chocks are for

Chocks were laid under the wheels of a standing airplane so that the machine would not roll away of its own accord on uneven ground, during an engine run or while mechanics were at work. On airfield surfaces they were utterly ordinary equipment, and in period photographs they are visible beside practically every parked machine. On a model they fill the same role optically too: a standing airplane with nothing around its wheels looks as if it were hovering, whereas a pair of chocks settles it unambiguously on the ground and gives the scene scale.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not by twisting them off. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or along the sharp edge of a metal ruler, so that the edges are clean and parallel. The joints are held best by super glue applied in a minimal amount with the tip of a toothpick. Bare brass photo-etched metal needs a base coat before painting, or the shade rubs off. You can imitate a wooden version with a beige base and glazing with oil paints, and the metal parts with a darker gray with a fine wash and scuffing suggested on the edges.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build Luftwaffe aircraft in the large 1:32 scale
  • Builders of airfield dioramas and vignettes with ground equipment
  • Anyone interested in the small details that give a finished model context
  • Modelers with basic experience of bending photo-etched parts

The set is an accessory, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory, that is a set of small photo-etched parts that are added to a finished model, or one under construction, in 1:32 scale.

A sharp scalpel, tweezers and super glue will see you through. A bending tool for photo-etched parts makes the work much easier, but the sharp edge of a metal ruler will stand in for it.

Apply a base coat first, or the shade rubs off bare brass. Wood is well imitated with a beige base and a glaze of oil paints, metal with a darker gray and a wash.

The chocks are separate ground equipment and are not tied to one type of kit. All that decides is a match of 1:32 scale.
