About product

Sikorsky H-19A Chickasaw 1:48, an AMP plastic kit

Plastic kit of the Sikorsky H-19A Chickasaw helicopter in 1:48 scale from AMP. It is a model to be assembled and painted, not a finished collector piece. AMP has long focused on less usual types of helicopters and experimental machines that the large manufacturers do not offer, so the subject is otherwise hard to come by.

The real subject

The Sikorsky S-55, listed with the United States armed forces as the H-19 Chickasaw, was one of the first genuinely usable transport helicopters. It first flew at the end of the 1940s and brought an unconventional design solution: the radial engine was mounted in the nose behind large hinged covers and the drive shaft ran diagonally upwards between the pilots' seats to the main gearbox. The crew cabin was thus placed above the cargo compartment and the whole fuselage stayed free for carrying troops or casualties. The H-19A version was the army variant with a Pratt & Whitney radial engine; the machine proved itself above all in the transport and rescue roles and spread to a number of countries under license and through export.

Building and painting tips

On a helicopter with a glazed front section, start with the cabin interior, because once the fuselage is glued you will not reach it. Glue the glazing with a cement made for clear parts, as ordinary liquid cement for plastic will fog the surfaces. It is a good idea to dry-fit the large hinged engine covers before gluing and to fill any gaps. The rotor blades look better with a gently suggested droop and with worn leading edges. Lay down a base of primer, apply the decals over a gloss coat and unify the whole with a matte or satin coat.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of helicopters in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers interested in equipment of the 1950s
  • More experienced builders, because kits from smaller brands need more fitting
  • Those looking for a subject outside the usual range of the big manufacturers

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a classic kit. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and glue and paints are not included in the package.

The engine was mounted in the nose behind hinged covers and the shaft ran diagonally between the pilots' seats. The fuselage thus stayed free for cargo or for the people being carried.

Rather for a modeler with practice. Kits from smaller brands usually need more careful fitting of the parts and more filling than mainstream kits.

The contents of the box are not specified here, so the number of schemes and the extent of the decal sheet are not stated here.
